Dale Ebcas: Exemplifying the USTP Spirit through Leadership and Inclusivity

If you’re unfamiliar with how our teachers are trailing the way when they go abroad,  it’s time to get acquainted. As the Project Development Director of the United Federation of Filipino American Educators and President of the Unified Chapter in Alaska, Dale Ebcas has become a beacon of dedication and innovation in the field of education in the remote regions of Alaska.

Dale Ebcas, (University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines Cagayan de Oro, BS Special Education, 2015) embarked on his journey into education with a passion for inclusivity and a commitment to making a difference.  He is a dedicated special education teacher from Kalskag Village, Alaska, who was honored with the prestigious Educator of the Year award in 2024. This recognition is a testament to his remarkable teaching dedication and tireless efforts to promote inclusivity for children with diverse needs across the state.

The award ceremony, held on May 10, 2024, at The Bridge Co. in Anchorage, celebrated educators who go above and beyond to inspire and lead. This accolade expresses deep gratitude for those who dedicate their lives to making a difference in education, embodying high moral standards and unwavering commitment to their students and colleagues.

Education for All

Dale’s notable achievements include receiving the Individual of the Year Award from the Governor’s Council on Disability and Special Education. This award acknowledges his innovative inclusive practices, which have been effectively integrated throughout his school district and the wider community. By actively involving parents, staff, and community members in education, Dale has fostered a collaborative approach to inclusion, reflecting the USTP attribute of innovative thinking.

As the School District’s Unified Sports Coordinator and Coach for basketball, bowling, and badminton, Dale’s leadership emphasizes the importance of inclusivity. He critically examines each situation to create opportunities for students with and without disabilities, fostering teamwork and a strong sense of community. His ability to evaluate and implement inclusive practices showcases his critical thinking skills, a hallmark of a USTP graduate.

Dale’s educational philosophy, “You can make a difference in the lives of your students. Believe in them, that they can do it, and be that adult who will never give up on them,” reflects his deep empathy. By understanding and connecting with his students, he fosters caring relationships and promotes an inclusive environment where every student feels valued.

The Educator of the Year award ceremony celebrated Dale’s achievements and recognized the contributions of the top 20 educators nominated from across Alaska. The event highlighted educators like Dale’s vital role in shaping their students’ lives and futures through their leadership, integrity, and commitment.
