The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Panaon, Misamis Occidental (USTP Panaon) participated in the lecture and hands-on training on Real-Time Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-qPCR) at the function room and molecular laboratory of the Research Division building of the Mindanao State University Naawan (MSU Naawan) in Naawan, Misamis Occidental on February 27, 2025. This intensive training provided a comprehensive understanding of RT-qPCR, a powerful tool in molecular biology used for gene expression analysis, disease diagnostics, and environmental monitoring.

Dr. Lowela Siarot Onggo, a Mindanaoan Balik Scientist from the Philippine Genome Center Mindanao, led the training, delving into the principles, applications, and troubleshooting techniques of RT-qPCR, covering essential topics such as sample preparation, nucleic acid extraction, primer design, and fluorescence detection methods. The hands-on laboratory exercises were a key part of the training, preparing participants with practical experience in setting up and running RT-qPCR assays, data interpretation, and quality control measures.
The training enhances technical skills and deepens understanding of molecular diagnostic techniques, which are highly relevant in biomedical and environmental research. The hands-on component was particularly beneficial as it provided direct experience with RT-qPCR workflows, from sample processing to result analysis, empowering participants with practical skills they can apply immediately.

This training opportunity signifies USTP’s dedication to reinforcing advancing scientific research and applying cutting-edge molecular techniques. The knowledge and skills gained will undoubtedly contribute to work in marine biology, physiology, or broader research endeavors.
