Innovate for Impact: USTP Computer Science students reach finals

Mark Vincent D. Limpahan, Hans Matthew E. Del Mundo, and Gerald P. Helbiro Jr., Computer Science students, along with their mentor Ms. Marylene S. Eder, MIT and faculty member at the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Cagayan de Oro (USTP CDO), were named finalists in the Innovate for Impact Competition: Solutions to Combat Plastic Pollution in Rivers and Canals. This international online competition, organized by the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) as part of its CounterMEASURE III project, was held on February 15, 2024, and was supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) with funding from the government of Japan. The competition aims to promote technological advancement and policy development to address plastic pollution in rivers and canals.
Team Eder’s Angels, representing USTP, was one of twenty applicants from universities in the Philippines, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Thailand and was selected among the top ten teams shortlisted to compete in the final round.
The participants’ innovative ideas spanned a range of solutions, from policy initiatives to upcycling innovations aimed at supporting cleanup efforts.

The panel of judges included Dr. Lakeesha Ransom, Enterprise Engagement Director at the AIT Entrepreneurship Center; Kevin Marks, Managing Director of Landmarks Vietnam; Alexander Radach, Founder of Sai Yok Springs Thailand; and Kavinda Gunasekara, Chief Operating Officer of the Global Water & Sanitation Center at AIT. They provided valuable feedback on each proposed project during the competition.
