The Society of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Students of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Jasaan, Misamis Oriental (USTP Jasaan) pushes for trash-free seas with its Coastal Cleanup in Barangay Bobontugan, Jasaan on February 8, 2025.
A total of 102 volunteers participated, collecting an impressive 254.4 kg of trash during the cleanup. The data gathered serves as baseline information for environmental research, community outreach, and policy recommendations specific to Jasaan. Students utilized data collection forms from Ocean Conservancy and followed guidelines from the International Coastal Cleanup, which allowed for a detailed analysis of the waste collected.

Before the cleanup, an orientation was held on February 2, 2025, to inform volunteers about the data collection tools and the significance of the event. The importance of gathering baseline data for community projects was emphasized, showcasing the value of student-led activities in promoting data-driven advocacy and outreach.
Volunteers, equipped with gloves, trash bags, and a strong commitment to making a difference, scoured the beaches and gathered significant debris. The collected items included plastic bottles, fishing nets, plastic wrappers, clothing, and other non-biodegradable waste that poses a threat to marine life.

USTP Jasaan continues to contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water. The collected data will be analyzed further and shared with the community to raise awareness and encourage action. The BSNAME Department is optimistic that this initiative will motivate students to maintain their commitment to data-driven advocacy and environmental stewardship.
