To strengthen the country’s resilience against health threats posed by disasters and climate change, the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD) has launched a groundbreaking research and development initiative under the 2025 Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation for Health (DRR-CCAH) Program. This initiative aims to harness scientific innovation to mitigate risks, enhance healthcare preparedness, and protect vulnerable communities from the escalating impacts of climate-related disasters.
The event, held on February 20, 2025, at the function hall of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Claveria, Misamis Oriental (USTP Claveria), gathered esteemed experts, facilitators, and faculty researchers from various colleges and research offices of USTP Claveria and USTP Cagayan de Oro. The program aimed to explore its objectives, timeline, and submission requirements for concept proposals.

In his welcome remarks, USTP Claveria Chancellor Dr. Renato O. Arazo, highlighted the critical role of research in addressing health challenges related to disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation. He emphasized that the PCHRD DRR-CCAH Program 2025 sets a clear direction for advancing health research in the Philippines. His speech reflected strong leadership and a commitment to innovation and collaboration — hallmarks of USTP Claveria’s mission to advance scientific knowledge for societal benefit. Dr. Arazo underscored the urgent need for research-driven solutions in public health and disaster preparedness, inspiring participants to engage in discussions actively. His message fostered a sense of unity and shared responsibility, reinforcing USTP Claveria’s role as a hub for research and development and its dedication to fostering partnerships that drive national progress.

Participants were given an overview of the DRR-CCAH program functions, focusing on its vital role in addressing health challenges caused by climate change and disasters.
A key segment of the event was the discussion on the concept proposal submission process. Attendees received detailed requirements and guidelines to ensure well-structured research proposals. This was followed by a Health Research Proposal Workshop, an interactive session to refine participants’ research ideas and methodologies.

Q&A sessions and consultation provided a platform for in-depth discussions. Experts, including S&T fellows and facilitators, addressed participants’ inquiries and offered insights on enhancing research proposals. This event underscored USTP’s higher education training and commitment to taking sustainable actions for the environment.
The PCHRD DRR-CCAH Program 2025 is a pivotal initiative in strengthening disaster resilience and climate adaptation through research. With continued support from experts and stakeholders, the program is expected to pave the way for groundbreaking studies that will contribute to the nation’s healthcare system and overall disaster preparedness.
