The Faculty, Alumni, Students, and Personnel Consumer Cooperative (FASPeCC) at the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Cagayan de Oro (USTP CDO) is working hand in hand with the University in its zero-waste efforts by supporting the campus-wide ban on single-use plastics (SUP), as outlined in the Office of the Pollution Control Section – USTP CDO Memorandum No. 004, s. 2024. Dr. Michael E. Versoza, Head of the Pollution Control Section, introduced this initiative.

USTP FASPeCC has designated bins fronting the cafeteria, which were donated by Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines and Nature Spring Waters Inc. and specifically designed for collecting plastic bottles. The collected plastic bottles will be sent to PlastikRepublic, a USTP FASPeCC co-partner, for recycling and repurposing.

As FASPeCC provides meals and catering services that contribute to the solid waste generation from the cafeteria alone, this initiative mitigates its solution. Here are the things we can do to help this initiative:

  1. Practice “CLAYGO” or Clean as You Go.
  2. Dispose and segregate properly when throwing trash.
  3. Bring your own reusable water bottles.

FASPeCC strongly supports the university’s goal of reducing solid waste and thus falls on the responsibility of the USTP Community to adhere to sustainable practices and follow these initiatives and implementations.

Through the University’s zero-waste efforts, all can work together to attain a more sustainable and environmentally friendly institution.
