The Faculty, Alumni, Students, and Personnel Consumer Cooperative (FASPeCC) at the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Cagayan de Oro (USTP CDO) has launched its support for the University’s drive to minimize solid waste generation by implementing the No More Paper Plates/Cups policy.

Beginning on September 20, 2024, FASPeCC, which offers meals and catering services, transitioned by providing metal food trays, spoons, and forks for rent at Php 5.00 per set. Students can rent these items by leaving their university ID as a deposit, which is returned upon the return of the utensils. This initiative supports the campus-wide ban on single-use plastics (SUP), as outlined in the Office of the Pollution Control Section – USTP CDO Memorandum No. 004, s. 2024.

In addition, the transition is reinforced by Memorandum No. 006, s. 2024 from the same office stipulates the terms for extending the sale of single-use plastics at the university for an additional six months. This memorandum underscores the importance of replacing disposable paper products with reusable food trays, with a goal of full implementation by November 15, 2024. The responsibility for this shift lies with the USTP community, which is encouraged to actively participate and contribute to this mandate.

Dr. Michael E. Versoza, Head of the Pollution Control Section, introduced the initiative to ban Single-Use Plastics (SUP) at USTP CDO with the support of Atty. Dionel O. Albina, USTP CDO Chancellor. Dr. Angelo Mark P. Walag, FASPeCC Chairman, also showed support through the FASPeCC’s initiative. The collaborative efforts reflect the University’s continued commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals for 2030.

The FASPeCC Board of Directors, in coordination with the Office of the USTP CDO Chancellor, is also considering expanding this initiative to all USTP campuses.

Ultimately, this initiative emphasizes the importance of going beyond policy compliance and embracing sustainability in everyday practices.
