On September 7, 2023, the USTP Board of Regents (BOR) embarked on a transnational education visit to South Korea to explore the innovative approaches to teaching implemented in the country. The university officials visited various educational institutions and organizations, including Korea University, IFEZ Smart City Integrated Operation Center, United Nations (UN) – Asian and Pacific Training Centre for Information and Communication Technology for Development (APCICT).
In attendance were Hon. Jo Mark M. Libre, Commissioner of the Commission on Higher Education; Dr. Ambrosio B. Cultura II, USTP System President; Hon. Rufus B. Rodriguez, Congressman, 2nd District of Cagayan de Oro City; Atty. Dionel O. Albina, USTP CDO Chancellor; Dr. Renato O. Arazo, USTP Claveria Chancellor; Hon. Mylah Faye Aurora B. Cariño, CESO III, NEDA X Regional Director; Hon. Clint Django G. Pacana, USTP Agropolis Science and Technology Park Manager; Hon. Romela N. Ratilla, DOST X Regional Director; Hon. Joshua Jones G. Waban, Federation of USTP Alumni Associations President; Hon. Charmaine I. Nokom, Federation of USTP Student Councils President.
One of the highlights of the visit is the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Sogang University, which aims to strengthen the research and development programs of the USTP as well as the training of the USTP professors on research and development at Sogang University in Seoul. It also offers the USTP students the chance to pursue 3-year diploma courses at Sogang University on scholarships after completing an online Korean language proficiency course.
Sogang University is a private research university in South Korea and holds the distinction of being the oldest Jesuit university in the country. It stands as one of the nation’s foremost institutions of higher learning. It is also recognized as one of the top three Catholic universities in the Asian region.
Seoul in South Korea is a global hub for technology and commerce and a country with a rich cultural heritage, modern infrastructure, and world-class educational institutions. South Korea, the home of some of the country’s most prestigious universities like Seoul National University, Korea University, and Yonsei University, has earned international recognition for its academic rigor and diverse programs. The USTP finds it fitting to conduct its transnational education visit to engage in cross-cultural learning experiences.
USTP System President Dr. Ambrosio B. Cultura II, on behalf of the university, entered into two agreements with Dr. Kwanwoo Shin, who serves as both the President of the Research and Business Development Foundation and the President of Scientist and Engineer Without Borders, Korea.
With this undertaking, the USTP looks forward to contributing to a more harmonious global society to navigate the challenges and opportunities of an interconnected world. The university hopes that the connections it builds will open doors to international job opportunities, collaborations, and cross-cultural insights toward a sustainable future.
