USTP Claveria expands to Talakag, Bukidnon: Successful 2-Day Student Orientation marks new milestone

Talakag, Bukidnon – The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Claveria, Misamis Oriental (USTP Claveria) successfully held a two-day Student Orientation on September 12-13, 2024, at the USTP Talakag Extension Class in Miarayon, Talakag, Bukidnon. The event introduced new students to the university’s academic environment, services, and policies, aiding their transition into university life.
The orientation was organized by USTP Claveria’s Office of Student Affairs and Services in collaboration with the National Service Training Program (NSTP) and Health Services. It provided essential information about academic programs, student welfare services, and community engagement.
Day 1 Highlights
The event kicked off with performances by the USTP Band and the KALASI Dance Troupe. Dr. Argin A. Gulanes, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Services, delivered the opening remarks, followed by an inspiring speech from Dr. Renato O. Arazo, Chancellor of USTP Claveria.
“We aim to help you grow not just academically but holistically, and we are here to support your aspirations throughout your journey at USTP,” Dr. Arazo emphasized, highlighting USTP’s mission to deliver quality education to remote areas.
Local government officials were in attendance, reinforcing the importance of education in community development. After the introduction of the university staff, Dr. Lazaro A. Gomez, OIC Director of the Talakag Extension, expressed his gratitude for the success of the event.
“Together, we create an environment where students can thrive. Your support has made this event a success,” Dr. Gomez said.
Professor Ramil C. Pagon, Director of Arts and Culture, encouraged students to engage with arts and culture, sharing, “Arts and culture are at the heart of our identity as a community and as a nation. Through your participation, you will not only enhance your creativity but also deepen your understanding of our rich heritage. Let this be an avenue for personal growth and a way to contribute to preserving our cultural legacy.”
Ms. Marielea Bactol, USTP Claveria Librarian, stressed the importance of utilizing library resources. “The library is not just a place for books; it’s a gateway to knowledge and academic success. I encourage you to explore the wealth of resources we have, both physical and digital, to support your studies and research. We are here to assist you in your academic journey,” she said.
Prof. Eddie S. Corpuz, NSTP Coordinator, emphasized the role of the National Service Training Program (NSTP) in fostering civic responsibility and leadership. “The NSTP is not just a requirement but an opportunity for each student to develop a deep sense of responsibility toward the community.
Through this program, you will not only acquire skills but also develop the heart to serve. We aim to build future leaders who are committed to making a difference in our nation,” he expressed.
Day 2 Highlights
The second day of the orientation focused on student services. Dr. Argin A. Gulanes discussed university policies, support systems, and scholarships, reiterating USTP’s commitment to accessible education.
“At USTP Claveria, we believe in the potential of every student. Our scholarship programs are designed not only to reward academic excellence but also to support those in need of financial assistance. We encourage you to explore the opportunities available, as education should be a right, not a privilege,” Dr. Gulanes shared.
Ms. Fides Joy N. Pabua, a University Nurse, discussed health protocols and emergency procedures, stressing the importance of campus safety: “Your health and well-being are our top priorities. We are here to ensure that you have access to the medical care and support you need throughout your time on campus. Please familiarize yourselves with the health protocols, and don’t hesitate to reach out in case of medical emergencies or concerns. Together, we can create a safe and healthy community.”
Dr. Lindylou M. Yamuta, Head of Student Affairs and Services, provided an overview of the various services available to students, including counseling and scholarship opportunities. “We encourage every student to actively participate in the programs we offer to ensure a well-rounded and enriching university experience,” she said.
In a separate session, Dr. Charly G. Alcantara, Dean of the College of Agriculture, highlighted the significance of agriculture in nation-building, urging students to take pride in their studies. “As students of agriculture, you are not only learning the science of growing food but also taking on the responsibility of feeding the nation. Embrace the knowledge and skills you will gain here, for you will be the future stewards of our land, ensuring sustainability and innovation in the agricultural sector,” Dr. Alcantara shared.
Moving Forward
After the successful two-day orientation, the USTP Talakag Extension Class is fully prepared to commence the new academic year with a well-informed and motivated student body.
The university remains committed to providing quality education and student services, ensuring every student has the tools and support necessary for academic and personal growth.
