Ms. Marylene S. Eder, MIT, a computer science faculty member, and Harvie Lorenz C. Babuyo, a computer science student of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Cagayan de Oro, won 1st prize in the International World Water Day 2024 Photo Competition. The Water Engineering and Management (WEM), Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), and Global Water and Sanitation Center (GWSC) organized the event in celebration of World Water Day.
The winning masterpiece of Ms. Eder and Mr. Babuyo’s photo captures the heartwarming bond between a mother and child. The caption “Simple Pump, Big Smiles” tells a story about the Filipino values of finding joy in a simple act with loved ones, like fetching water from a manual pump.
“Though facing hardship, their community finds peace in shared resources like clean water. Despite their struggles, their bond strengthens with each drop, reminding us of the resilience found in unity and the beauty of life’s simplest blessings. The child’s smile reminds us that even the smallest contribution brings happiness,” Ms. Eder said.
The theme “Water for Peace” encapsulates the meaning of “Water sustains life, and sharing it fosters peace,” Ms. Eder added.
The declaration of winners was announced at the Robert B. Banks Auditorium, AITCC of the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand, on March 21, 2024. Engr. Wendell D. Talampas received the award on behalf of the participants.
