On October 10–11, 2023, the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) successfully staged the 2023 Research and Innovation Summit to celebrate National Science and Technology Week.
The USTP System conducted the two-day summit with the theme, “Nexus of Sustainability: Democratizing Research-driven Innovations for a Sustainable Future.” It featured keynote speeches by research and innovation experts during the opening ceremonies and the subsequent parallel sessions. Scientific exhibits and oral and poster presentations of research also highlighted the event.
Opening Ceremony & Keynote Sessions
Dr. Apolinario B. Gonzaga Jr., the university’s Vice President for Research and Innovation (VPRI), officially opened the summit at the Dr. Ricardo E. Rotoras (DRER) Memorial Hall at USTP Cagayan de Oro. During the activity, the VPRI signed the Declaration of the Opening of the Summit together with Dr. Franch Maverick A. Lorilla, the summit’s Program Head and USTP CDO b.i.t.e.s. TBI Manager.
Dr. Rigoberto Advincula, a Professor from the Department of Macromolecular Science and Engineering at Case Western Reserve University in the USA, started the series of sessions and talks by delivering his keynote address. His presentation centered around Empowering the Next Generation through Sustainable Polymer Innovations: A Confluence of Cutting-Edge Research, Inclusive Mentorship, and Global Collaboration.
The second keynote session unveiled a captivating exploration of the Dynamic Landscape of the Philippine Startup Ecosystem: A Closer Look at Cagayan de Oro’s Role and Potential, which featured Mr. Ghers Fisman, the esteemed Lead Ecosystem Consultant of StartupBlink, the world’s most comprehensive startup ecosystem map and research center.
Startup Ecosystem Consortium & New Energy Nexus Launching
An exciting event in the field of innovation soon took place through the Startup Ecosystem Consortium, which was officially launched and signed through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with signatories from various sectors, including academia, private businesses, public sectors, and government organizations, all uniting from across the dynamic region of Northern Mindanao.
The launching and MOA signing for the New Energy Nexus followed. USTP officials and Mr. Jan Ralph Ebora, the New Nexus’ Startup Development Program Manager, participated.
Both agreements propel greener innovations that promise to advance a sustainable future for all.
Parallel Sessions: Research & Innovation Highlights
In the afternoon of Day One, the summit transitioned into parallel sessions featuring two pivotal categories: Research and Innovation.
For research, organizers divided the conference into three simultaneous sessions, each hosted in its dedicated AVR venue. On innovation, attendees witnessed two keynote speeches at the DRER Memorial Hall.
The first keynote speaker, Ms. Karla Legaspi, Head of Community and Ecosystem at QBO Innovation Hub, presented the QBO x (Cities) Startup Forum.
Afterward, the second keynote speaker, Engr. Jan Ralph Ebora, Program Manager for Startup Development at New Nexus, explored “Empowering Startups: Sustainable Energy Innovations for the Next Generation of Entrepreneurs.”
CDO Vice Mayor Introduces Startup Ordinance to Boost Local Innovation
During the summit’s afternoon plenary session, Cagayan de Oro Local Government Unit (CDO-LGU) Vice Mayor Jocelyn B. Rodriguez initiated a significant change to support innovation and entrepreneurship within the city through the Startup Ordinance.
According to the Vice Mayor, the ordinance would exempt Cagayan de Oro City startups from taxation until their products are commercially viable. It aims to boost job creation, drive innovation, and empower local entrepreneurs.
More Parallel Sessions
The summit continued its dynamic journey on the second day, where more parallel sessions were held. The sessions offered attendees diverse opportunities to delve into specific topics and interests.
A series of highly informative keynote speeches occurred throughout the day, designed to provide valuable insights and inspiration. The program also included engaging plenary sessions where thought leaders and experts shared their wisdom and perspectives.
The second day also featured the exciting launch of various innovative initiatives, underscoring the summit’s commitment to driving progress and change in research and innovation.
New International Course Offering launched
The USTP embarked on a transformative journey with the Wadhwani Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that accelerates economic development through job creation using large-scale initiatives in entrepreneurship, small business growth, innovation, and skilling.
The launch and formal signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the university and the foundation marked the start of an Entrepreneurship Education International Course offering.
The collaboration aims to enhance entrepreneurship education on a global scale. Through this initiative, the university and the Wadhwani Foundation aim to cultivate entrepreneurial skills and promote and facilitate international cooperation in entrepreneurship.
CET Incubation Program Demo Day
Five promising incubatees pitched their groundbreaking innovations at the DRER Memorial Hall during the much-anticipated CET Incubation Program Demo Day, a platform for innovation and entrepreneurship.
The participants in this exciting showcase include Sentinex, Ani, Frugie, Stella, and Nano-tek, each poised to present their transformative concepts and creations to an eager and attentive audience.
