USTP empowers students through Gender and Development Symposium

In celebration of National Women’s Month and to further promote Gender and Development (GAD), the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines, through its Extension and Community Relations Division (ECRD) in USTP Cagayan de Oro (USTP CDO), organized a meaningful Gender and Development Symposium on March 24, 2025, at the Dr. Ricardo E. Rotoras Memorial Hall (USTP CDO Gymnasium). The event focused on educating students on the impact of gender issues on various aspects of life, including education. It also aimed to raise awareness, promote gender equality, and foster inclusivity among students.


Dr. Jocelyn B. Barbosa, USTP CDO Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, opened the event, highlighting the importance of a gender-fair society in promoting an inclusive environment.
Atty. Dionel O. Albina, USTP CDO Chancellor, delivered an inspirational message, emphasizing that women need to be empowered by giving them equal opportunities.

Key Discussions
Dr. Marichu B. Montecillo, Bukidnon State University GAD Focal Person, discussed Basic GAD Concepts and Basic Overview of Gender Sensitivity and Gender-Fair Language, stressing the importance of gender sensitivity and inclusive language in promoting an inclusive environment.
Atty. Pilipinas Palma from the Regional Development Council Region X (RDC-X), Regional Gender and Development Committee (RGADC), and Regional Pool of Gender and Development Resource Persons (RPGRP), discussed Gender and Development Mandates, highlighting the legal frameworks, policies, and commitments that promote gender development on a national and international level.

The Gender and Development Symposium was vital in promoting gender equality and awareness. USTP continues to create a gender-inclusive environment by providing empowering learning opportunities for students.
