USTP enters Top 15 at First Gen’s carbon footprint innovative solutions competition

Team Green Energy Coders of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Cagayan de Oro (USTP CDO) successfully entered the top 15 during the semifinal round of “Code Green for Campuses.”

The team, guided by their esteemed adviser, Engr. Jay Noel N. Rojo, MSIT, the Chairperson of the Information Technology department of the College of Information Technology and Computing (CITC), is composed of four (4) Information Technology students, namely Joephine N. Calapiz, Team Captain; Erickson A. Dela Cruz, Full Stack Developer; Mark Rylle G. Gaje, IoT Expert; and Francis Kenneth H. Mabanta, Mobile Developer.

Their project, “SmartBTech for USTP: An Integrated Web, Mobile, and IoT-Based Real-Time Energy Utilization Monitoring, Control, and Anomaly Detection of Campus Buildings,” highlighted the university’s commitment to environmental advocacy, enabling them to pass the elimination round on February 19, 2024, which led them to secure a spot in the semifinal round.

The team again competed on March 4 for the final round, wherein only five teams could come out and get the chance to present their entries. The panel of judges was led by Dr. Rodel Lasco, the executive director of the Oscar M. Lopez Center for Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Management Foundation, Inc.

On March 16, 2024, the five successful teams presented their entries at the Novotel Manila Araneta City in Cubao, Quezon City.

The winning school will receive a cash prize of 1 million pesos. The student team that will top the competition will receive Php 100,000.00, Php 75,000.00 for the first runner-up, Php 50,000.00 for the second runner-up, Php 30,000.00 for the third runner-up, and Php 20,000.00 for the fourth runner-up.

The competition is organized by the First Gen Corporation, one of the Philippines’ leading providers of clean and renewable energy, to develop the best and most innovative ideas and solutions to eliminate carbon footprints. Twenty-nine (29) universities and colleges with fifty-two (52) student teams have joined the competition.
