The students and faculty of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) Jasaan demonstrated their remarkable preparedness and resilience during the 2nd Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) for CY 2023, which aimed to show an organization’s readiness for a potential earthquake disaster, frequently referred to as the “Big One.”
On June 8, 2023, the NSED 2023 was conducted by a team of experienced USTP Jasaan faculty members under the leadership of the earthquake marshal, Engr. Brian D. Genon.
The participants engaged in interactive simulations, learning about earthquake dynamics, early warning systems, emergency preparedness kits, and evacuation procedures (e.g., duck, cover, and hold). The sessions emphasized the importance of staying calm and composed during a crisis while implementing preventive measures to minimize harm.
The USTP Jasaan community exhibited commendable teamwork and coordination throughout the exercise. Students showcased their leadership abilities by organizing evacuation routes and assisting their peers calmly and orderly.
This event served as a practical exercise and an opportunity to raise awareness among the USTP Jasaan community on the importance of disaster preparedness. It emphasized the significance of having an emergency plan, maintaining a stock of essential supplies, and understanding the local infrastructure’s vulnerabilities.
