BS Marine Biology students April Jay A. Aclo, Ruby B. Cagas, Fritz John T. Castillo, and Jessa Mae B. Quiawan from the Department of Marine Biology (DMB) of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) in Panaon, Misamis Occidental, conducted a study on the growth and survival rate of mangrove propagules in different substrates from February 12, 2023, to May 12, 2023.
The study’s primary purpose is determining the best substrate type for mangrove propagules. The study investigated the effect of four different mixtures of substrates on the growth of the four species of mangroves, namely, Bruguiera cylindrica, Ceriops decandra, Rhizophora apiculata, and Rhizophora mucronata. The three-month monitoring included one hundred forty-four (144) propagules, where each species has (9) replicates.
During the sampling period, the researchers determined the effectiveness of different treatments by measuring the growth of the various mangrove propagules in plant height, stem diameter, and number of leaves. In addition, the researchers also took the survival and mortality rates of the entire samples.
The study results could serve as baseline data for establishing a mangrove nursery to grow out propagules ready for transplantation whenever there is any mangrove planting activity in the province.
Mr. Mark L. Arcilla, BS Marine Biology instructor, guided the researchers throughout the study.
