Students from the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Cagayan de Oro (USTP CDO) brought pride to the institution by winning awards at the IP Circle League National Competition. Participants from the Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Bachelor of Science in Technology Communication Management programs excelled in two categories, showcasing their creativity, technical expertise, and advocacy for Intellectual Property (IP).

The national competition’s awarding ceremony, held on November 25, 2024, at the University of the Philippines Bonifacio Global City Campus in Taguig, highlighted the importance of IP education and advocacy. The event provided a platform for students to Create, Interact, Refine, Compete, Learn, and Experience (C.I.R.C.L.E.) in the dynamic world of intellectual property.

Ad Competition: 1st Runner-Up

USTP Data Science students Kein Jake Culanggo, Nicole Menorias, and Hernel Niño Juanico, under the mentorship of Mr. Albert Christopher P. Daniot II, Faculty of the Department of Data Science, secured the 1st Runner-Up award in the Ad Competition. Their entry, themed “No Ship Too Small – Let’s Sail Together Towards a Sustainable Future,” was a striking visual campaign that underscored the interconnectedness of global efforts toward sustainability.

The design, as shared on the official Facebook page of the Department of Data Science, featured sunrays inspired by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It symbolized the collective global commitment to achieving a sustainable future. The project emphasized the critical role of data in driving purposeful decisions and creating meaningful impacts in society.

Story Competition: 2nd Runner-Up

In the Story Competition, Technology Communication Management students Emman James Maputol, Rhanzel Torregosa, Chellsie Faith Daet, Audrey Jane Baslot, Jan Liam Cantago, Luis Vincent Cabillar, Kimberly Cerequillo, Chellsy Madria Mayuman, Lukas Miguel Pallugna, and April Hope Daday achieved the 2nd Runner-Up spot with their short film, “Larawan.” They were guided by Mr. John David Moncada, Faculty of the Department of Technology Communication Management.

The film explores mental health and IP issues through the story of Theo, a man grappling with schizophrenia. Obsessed with an imaginary character named Monica, Theo continuously paints her image, inspired by a painting from his friend Jerome. Conflict arises when Jerome accuses Theo of stealing his artwork, leading to a poignant confrontation that examines whether Theo’s actions stem from his mental illness or deliberate plagiarism.

About the IP CIRCLE League

The IP C.I.R.C.L.E. League, organized by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) through its IP Academy Division, features four competitions designed to enhance students’ understanding of intellectual property:

  1. The Quiz – Tests participants’ IP knowledge, providing an interactive learning experience
  2. The Debate – A platform for discussing IP issues, following a modified Oxford-Oregon format
  3. The Story – A short film competition that highlights IP’s role in addressing social issues
  4. The Ad – A poster-making contest promoting IP advocacy through visual campaigns

Participants included universities and colleges across the Philippines. The competition complements USTP’s initiatives, mainly through the Technology Promotions and Commercialization Office (TPCO), in fostering a strong IP ecosystem and demystifying intellectual property for students.

A Celebration of Creativity and Innovation

USTP celebrates the achievements of its students, who exemplify the university’s commitment to nurturing creativity, innovation, and leadership in science and technology. Their success at the IP Circle League reflects their dedication to learning and advancing the principles of intellectual property.

Congratulations, Trailblazers!
