Dr. Ambrosio B. Cultura II, System President of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP), was invited as one of the esteemed panelists at the Wadhani Foundation’s EmpowerED Symposium on October 3, 2023, at the JPL Hall of Freedom of theLyceum of the Philippines in Manila. The symposium, aptly titled “Forging Convergence and Synergy on Entrepreneurship Education in the Philippines,” aimed to foster collaboration and synergy in entrepreneurship education within the Philippines.
During the symposium, Dr. Cultura met key figures from the Wadhani Foundation, including President for Wadhwani Global Entrepreneur, Meetul Patel, and Executive Vice President Rajeev Warrier. The foundation aims to work closely with Dr. Cultura and other stakeholders to enhance the training of Global Entrepreneurship Educators in the Philippines, enabling more students to become successful entrepreneurs and contribute to the country’s economic development.
One of the core principles of the Wadhani Foundation’s mission had been to expand its impact through partnerships and collaboration. Dr. Ambrosio B. Cultura, a prominent figure in the Philippine academic and entrepreneurial landscape, had been invited to participate as a panelist in recognition of his significant contributions to building the country’s startup ecosystem. His presence at the symposium enriched discussions, fostered knowledge exchange, and facilitated collaboration among academia, industry experts, non-governmental organizations, government entities, and professional associations.
The EmpowerED Symposium was an integral moment for the evolution of entrepreneurship education in the Philippines. Dr. Cultura’s participation highlighted the event’s importance for shaping the country’s future of entrepreneurship. New insights, innovative ideas, and collaborative projects developed as the symposium progressed, fueling the expansion of entrepreneurship and economic development in the Philippines.
The event is a significant initiative of the Wadhani Foundation, an international not-for-profit organization founded by Silicon Valley entrepreneur Dr. Romesh Wadhwani in 2020. The Wadhani Foundation accelerates economic development by creating jobs through entrepreneurship, small business growth, innovation, and skilling. With a global footprint spanning Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the United States, it has played a vital role in catalyzing entrepreneurial endeavors worldwide.
The foundation commenced its mission in the Philippines in 2016 and has successfully scaled up the Wadhwani Entrepreneur Network (WEN) Program. The program aims to inspire, educate, and enable startup entrepreneurs through the Ignite and Liftoff Programs. One of the flagship offerings was the free Ignite Course in Entrepreneurship, used by 29 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the Philippines. This course imparted critical knowledge on the intricacies of starting and running a successful business through case-study-based experiential learning delivered via a digital platform.
The Wadhani Foundation had made remarkable strides in entrepreneurship education in the Philippines, with achievements including:
- training over 100 Certified Entrepreneurship Educators from 29 HEI partners through eight batches;
- enrolling and completing the Ignite Course in Entrepreneurship by more than 20,000 students since 2017;
- fostering the development of over 6,000 Practice Venture Teams since 2019, with over 2,000 nominated for Global Jury Certification; and
- certifying 1,300 Practice Venture Teams through a rigorous evaluation process, many of which had had the potential to transform into real ventures.
