USTP triumphs with multiple awards at KUMBIRA 2024

The two major campuses of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Cagayan de Oro and Claveria (USTP CDO and USTP Claveria) achieved remarkable success at KUMBIRA 2024, held from October 16-18, 2024 at the Limketkai Mall Atrium in Cagayan de Oro City. With the theme Keeping Traditions, Brewing Innovations, this prestigious event, organized by the Cagayan de Oro Hotel & Restaurant Association (COHARA), celebrated culinary arts and showcased the talents of aspiring chefs and food innovators.

USTP CDO and USTP Claveria earned significant recognition across various categories, underscoring their commitment to culinary excellence and innovation.

USTP CDO Awards

In the academe category, USTP CDO students excelled with the following achievements:

  • Earl Paul M. Zuluaga, a Bachelor of Technical Vocational Teacher Education (BTVTEd-FSM) student, secured a Bronze Medal in the Regional Fresh Fruit Juice Mocktail Competition

Wendell P. Medico, a Bachelor of Technical Teacher Education (BTLEd-HE) student, also showcased his expertise in the Bed Making Competition.

Dedicated faculty members guided these talented individuals: Ms. Ivy L. Bontrosto, Ms. Cianebe O. Oco, Ms. Jazel Mae Dagoc, and Mr. Robert A. Oguimas Jr.

USTP Claveria Awards

USTP Claveria students also displayed outstanding skills, earning the following awards:

  • Jean Hallazgo and Jollyme Sagulay won Gold in the Baby Cakes Freestyle competition, coached by Ms. Maribel Abella and Ms. May Flor Basco
  • Jenmary Mae Mapalo and Maui Guzman took Silver in the Best Regional Ingredient (Rice) competition, guided by coaches Mr. Glenfford Esparcia and Mr. Rodney Labadan
  • Ariane Centino earned Silver in the Best Regional Ingredient (SUHA) category, mentored by Ms. Vivian Butac and Ms. Cherry Mae Montecalvo
  • Limuel Magallon achieved Silver in the Regional Fruit Jam/Preserve (Langka – Professional) category
  • Josephus Sadicon and Louie John Lamzon won Silver in the Regional Fruit Jam/Preserve (Langka – Student) division, coached by Mr. Limuel Magallon
  • Nicka Gamayon received a Diploma in the Regional Kakanin Platter competition, supported by coaches Ms. Jedd Ann Sopanjare and Ms. Jasmine Carawana
A Celebration of Culinary Talent

KUMBIRA 2024, recognized as the longest-running culinary show in the Philippines, brings together talents from schools, universities, and hotels. This year’s event included dual categories — professional and academic — spotlighting emerging and seasoned culinary professionals.

USTP’s success in KUMBIRA 2024 reflects its commitment to fostering innovation and excellence in the culinary arts.
